THE MELANIN PROJECT

The Melanin Project is a photo blog created to prioritize the voices of the Ottawa Black community.

The project mentioned focuses on showcasing stories and photographs of individuals from diverse backgrounds within the city. Its purpose is to capture people engaging in activities they are passionate about and sharing their interests with others. This photoblog serves as a platform featuring both images and biographies of numerous members of the black Ottawa community.

The project is a collaborative effort involving several individuals. Kafia, a talented local photographer, captures the captivating images that are showcased on the website. Writer Vanessa contributes her skills by crafting engaging narratives to accompany the photographs, adding depth and context to each story. Nora, a content creator, and graphic designer, brings the texts to life. Welcome our newest member, Jamillia, our project coordinator that keeps organizing, coordinating, and overseeing various aspects of the project to ensure its successful execution on this remarkable endeavor.

The primary goal of this project is to amplify the voices and experiences of the black Ottawa community. By showcasing a diverse range of languages, cultures, and opinions, the website aims to create a vibrant and inclusive space for individuals to express themselves. Through this initiative, the community's rich tapestry is displayed, highlighting its unique perspectives and contributions.

Overall, this collaborative project serves as a powerful medium to celebrate and elevate black voices and photographs in Ottawa, fostering understanding, appreciation, and connection within the community and beyond.

Our Melanin Mantra:

“Black people are not monoliths. We are beautiful from all angles, shapes, diasporas, sexualities, abilities, and histories. We are people who are allowed to be unapologetically authentic. "
